Albanians run for election

Belgrade, 04 January (Source: B92) - Albanian parties from Southern Serbia submitted a joint electoral list.

Riza Halimi’s Democratic Action Party and Skender Destani’s Democratic Union of the Valley make up a joint electoral list called Albanian Coalition from Preševo Valley, comprising 10 candidates, among them four women.
Albanians stand for Serbian parliamentary elections for the first time after 10 years.
The electoral list got the support of 3180 voters from Bujanovac, Preševo and Medveđa.
Halimi said that he aimed to campaign for the regionalization and decentralization of Serbia and for tackling minority rights issues. “We hope that European-oriented democratic parties will prevail and allow efficient solutions for minority issues. We are giving our best to convince our voters that we stand a chance of ascending to levels of authority that we are entitled to”, says Halimi. Dušan Janjić, coordinator of the Forum for Ethnic Relations, says this is a positive sign showing that the Albanians living in Southern Serbia have opted to play an active part in Serbia and its institutions. He also adds that Serbia needs a serious plan for handling the major issues of the region in perspective.
